Why hype words and gear know it all's drive me crazy

We have all heard the cool "in" words of the day, the hype words that get discussions going and often off the rails. People hear or read or see something new and think it is law, or constantly throwing it around in every conversation to show how smart they are or trying to make others feel like less of a musician. I love these phrases and the people who use them. Because if you dig deeper into their knowledge, you will find that they do not know much of anything.

Story time for you, bare with me. You will understand afterward. In the late eighties something hit that was cool at the time and brand new. It was called "Midi". I am sure most of you know about it now. We had a friend in the circle that saw this Midi thing. And afterward, every time we looked at new rack mount gear or PA equipment or even pedals. He would spit out. "It isn't midi so it sucks. Thing is, not even he knew how midi worked and what you needed to make it work back then. He just learned about it, that it was the future and ran with it.

Now, fast forward to the present. I put up a lot of videos and talk pedals and order and how to run them and their cables. So, I know that when I talk about my main rig, and I say or my pics show all my pedals run through the front of the Marshall JCM 800 Head. And some guy blurts out, those none dirt effects should be run through the FX Loop. And if you knew pedals like you are trying to show people. You would have known that. All I can think is, your so adorable for a moron. Because if you knew anything. You would know a Vintage JCM 800 head does not have an FX Loop. Now do not get me wrong. I love a good discussion and I love to learn new things. But people, learn to ask questions or ask why, don't attack someone like your in the know. And here is the thing, even if I had an FX Loop, who says I have to use it. What if I do not like the way mine sounds? There could be a hundred reasons I am running front of head.

Another one I get alot. Everyone knows a real Bass player would never use a pick. I am not even going to address this one. Just let you think about that for a minute. There are so many more. Are those pedals run in Chorus? Did you run your set up in Parallel? Why are you using all those pedals when you could just get a Fractal or what ever is in at the time? You know all pedals are junk except Strymon pedals, right? Don't even get me started on the buffer equation. Well that is enough for today. Enjoy, buy what you like and make your sound.....your sound.
